In an increasingly turbulent world situation, these discussions look behind the headlines of the mainstream press and the statements of politicians, to bring out the real processes and interests at play.

The World School of Communism

Every two years, the Revolutionary Communist International hosts a world school. Bringing together thousands of communists from all around the globe in person and online for a week of discussion on Marxist theory, these schools are crash courses for steeling revolutionaries in the ideas we need to bring down this system. All of these talks have been made available to stream online, making them a permanent and extremely valuable resource. On Tuesday February 3, industrial workers, workers from the service sector and from the state sector, together with members of dozens of communal councils, marched through the streets of Barcelona to condemn the killing of two Mitsubishi workers the week before.

En la tarde del jueves 29 de enero dos trabajadores resultaron muertos por la policía del estado Anzoategui, Venezuela. Los dos trabajadores asesinados son Pedro Suarez, trabajador de Mitsubishi, y José Marcano, trabajador de la empresa autopartista Macusa. Ambos fueron muertos cuando la policía del estado Anzoategui trataba de desalojar a cientos de trabajadores que habían ocupado la planta de Mitsubishi (MMC).

Lis Mandl spoke at the IMT Winter School on the subject of "Women and Revolution". She looks at how the recent financial crisis has affected working women and how the women’s question is inseparable from the struggle of the working class as a whole.

At the end of January 2009 in a meeting of Socialist Appeal a discussion was held about the latest developments in the international situation. Alan Woods introduced the discussion.

Fred Weston spoke at a recent day school of Socialist Appeal on how the Cuban revolution, starting out as a bourgeois democratic revolution, was forced to move against capitalism in order to achieve its aims, a brilliant confirmation of Trotsky’s theory of the Permanent Revolution. Now there are growing pressures inside Cuba to adopt the so-called “Chinese model”, i.e. changes that would eventually lead to the re-establishment of capitalism in Cuba. There are also those who resist this idea and are seeking ways of building socialism on the island.

Angry workers at the Oxford BMW plant demand answers from their union leadership after a ruthless redundancy notice has been read out by the management.

Marie Frederiksen talks at the IMT Winter School in Berlin about how the German workers could have taken power in 1918-19. Unfortunately the German Communists committed a series of errors, errors which we must learn from and prepare for the future.

Alan Woods talks at the IMT Winter School in Berlin on the topic of 'Marxism and Religion'. Alan explains the materialist conception of the world, integral to the theory of Marxism, and contrasts it to the idealist perspective that gives rise to religion. Alan explains the nature of religion as a means of consoling the oppressed with a life after death.

These two videos show how the workers only had stones and the police was firing live ammunition, contrary to reports in the Venezuelan bourgeois media. The first video shows the moment in which Javier Marcano (Tiko Tiko) was killed.

Alan Woods spoke at the IMT Winter School in Berlin on the subject of the relationship between Art and the Class Struggle.

Jérôme Métellus, member of Parti communiste français and La Riposte, talks about the congress of the PCF held in December 2008. Before the congress the Marxists of La Riposte presented their document "Renforcer le PCF, renouer avec le marxisme". The document obtained a resounding success which went beyond any expectations: 5419 or 15.04% of the total valid votes.

On Thursday, January 22rd, there was a successful inauguration of Dr. Lal Khan's new book, "Pakistan's Other Story - The 1968-69 Revolution" in London. Young and old, students and trade unionists, turned up to hear a panel of speakers including Zakir Hussain, Qayyum Butt, and Alan Woods who addressed the audience before Lal Khan spoke.

Roberto Sarti, member of FalceMartello, talks about the economic and political situation of Italy, the elections of April, the congress of Rifondazione Comunista in July and the recent strike movement of the workers and the youth.
