In Against the Stream, our weekly current affairs podcast, members of the International Secretariat of the Revolutionary Communist International sit down to discuss the main events shaping global affairs. In an increasingly turbulent world situation, these discussions look behind the headlines of the mainstream press and the statements of politicians, to bring out the real processes and interests at play.

The World School of Communism

Every two years, the Revolutionary Communist International hosts a world school. Bringing together thousands of communists from all around the globe in person and online for a week of discussion on Marxist theory, these schools are crash courses for steeling revolutionaries in the ideas we need to bring down this system. All of these talks have been made available to stream online, making them a permanent and extremely valuable resource. We reported recently on the extremely successful 32nd congress of the Pakistani Marxists of The Struggle. Here we provide a five minute video of the end of the congress when the comrades sing the Internationale, led by the famous Pakistani singer, Jawad Ahmad. It is worth watching as it gives a real flavour of the mood at the congress.

At the recent annual Marxist Winter School, this year hosted by the UCLU Marxist Society in London, the agenda was was dedicated to the 130th anniversary of Karl Marx’s death, with sessions covering the important contributions that Marx made towards the worlds of politics, economics, history, and philosophy. Here we provide the videos of the opening and closing sessions, by Alan Woods, regaring the The Relevance of Marxism Today and the tasks of the Marxists.

At a 2013 Marxist Winter School, John Pickard - former editor the Militant - explores the topic of Marxism and Science.

Rui Faustino is a librarian and a civil servant in Lisbon. He talks about the economic crisis in Portugal as part of the general crisis of European capitalism. The government is implementing the demands of the troika (IMF, ECB, EU) by attacking the conditions and rights of the workers and youth, which leads to a social disaster. Meanwhile unemployment is rising to a record high. The workers and youth fought back on several occasions with demonstrations and general strikes. He is proposing a united front of the Left Block (Bloco de Esquerda) and the Communist Party against the austerity measures in breaking with the capitalist conception of Europe.

Alex Grant, editor of the Canadian Marxist journal Fighback, speaks to a class of 150 students at Toronto's York University about the topic "Is Marxism still relevant?". The video was recorded in the autumn of 2012.

Today, Alan Woods, political editor of Marxist.com spoke on the BBC2 news and current affairs programme Daily Politics, highlighting the relevance of Marxism today as capitalism is shaken by severe crisis. Below you can watch the clip.

Tomorrow, Friday 15 February, Alan Woods, political editor of Marxist.com will be interviewed by Susana Mendonca on the BBC 2 news and current affairs programme Daily Politics. The interview, which was recorded yesterday, will cover a number of important issues, ranging from the Bolivarian Revolution and the role of Hugo Chavez to the relevance of Marxism today.

Alan Woods, editor of the In Defence of Marxism website, speaks about the history of philosophy at the UCL Universiy Marxist Society in London.

Ilias Kirousis (Ηλίας Κυρούσης) talks about the movement of the Greek workers and youth against the austerity measures of the government. He explains the struggle of workers of two metal factories and the occupied newspaper Eleftherotypia. Ilias concludes by illustrating the situation of the immigrant workers, the role of Golden Dawn and how to fight the fascists.

Stamatis Karayannopoulos (Σταμάτης Καραγιαννόπουλος) explains the reasons for the economic and social crisis in Greece as part of the general crisis of world capitalism. He also talks about the movement against austerity measures, the trade union struggle and the situation of the left (SYRIZA and KKE). Finally Stamatis explains the programme of the Marxists.

In a world of constant misery and suffering, Christianity promises happiness in the "afterlife." Instead of the promise of plenty in heaven, Marxism wants to build a paradise in this life. This is a recording of a festive debate where Alan Woods, leading member of the International Marxist Tendency and author of "Reason in Revolt: Marxist philosophy and modern science" debate Peter D Williams, Catholic writer and apologist (Catholic Voices) about which body of ideas offers a way forward for the world today.

The crisis of capitalism, and the austerity measures associated with it, has unleashed massive movements in Greece, Spain, and elsewhere. The rich think that the working class should be made to pay for their crisis, millions are responding with a resounding "no!" The capitalist system itself is being questioned by millions. Is the United States next to face a similar question? These and many other questions are addressed by Marxist writer and activist Alan Woods in Boston.
