There is not a single Latin American country whose land is not soaked with blood spilt by American imperialism. This has been the case for over a hundred years. But now that America has entered an era of decay, it has set its sights squarely on its backyard. The strangulation of the Cuban Revolution, weaponised tariffs, threats against presidents, and the kidnapping of Maduro are only the beginning of US imperialism’s attempt to retrench itself in the hemisphere and push China out of the continent.

It is not an exaggeration to say that the greatest political scandal of all time is unfolding before our eyes. The magnitude of the Epstein revelations is not only breathtaking—it is without parallel in the history of class society. Never before has the global ruling class had its dirtiest, darkest inner workings exposed publicly in this way. No scandal has ever implicated such a wide swathe of the world’s financial and political elite and their ruling institutions.

This February, the leadership of the Revolutionary Communist International met in Italy to assess the world situation and how the forces of communism are being gathered and trained around the globe, and to plan ahead. Below we publish a transcript of a talk on the world situation by Jorge Martín of the International Secretariat of the RCI, assessing where the world is going in these turbulent first months of 2026.

The 16th annual Montreal Marxist Winter School was a landmark event for communism in Quebec and Canada. The event received rave reviews from attendees, and the mood matched the seriousness of this moment in history—with all 750 attendees more determined to learn and build the forces of communism than ever.

On 17 February 2026, the already broken republic of Peru added a new chapter to its long history of political instability. Congress, with 75 votes in favour, approved the censure and removal of President José Jerí, who had taken office just 130 days earlier following the departure of Dina Boluarte. The reason? A scandal known as ‘chifagate’: clandestine meetings between the president and Chinese businessmen, sparking suspicions of corruption.

The Cuban revolution is in grave danger! Trump's oil blockade has cut off the island's fuel supplies, plunging the country into prolonged blackouts, halting public transport, and threatening a full-scale humanitarian crisis. With Venezuelan oil cut off and Mexico bowing to US threats, Trump is tightening the noose to asphyxiate the island after 67 years of relentless pressure.

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has dominated postwar Japanese politics, won the largest majority in Japanese history at the recent Lower House elections. In reality, this was not a vote for the LDP but for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who skillfully tapped into an anti-establishment mood that found no expression in Japan’s moribund opposition.

The Argentinian capitalist class, weighed down by high debts and low investment, is turning to the only weapon it has left: counter-reforms that lengthen the working day, make work more precarious, and attack the right to strike. Not taking this lying down, over one million protested across Argentina, fighting armed police in the streets.

A year and a half ago, Bangladesh’s July Revolution inspired the whole world. After 15 years of Hasina’s dictatorship, the Bangladeshi masses – led by the students – flooded the stage of history and swept her and her Awami League away. Ecstatic hopes were vested in the interim government of Muhammed Yunus, who was supposed to usher in a new era of reform.

Cuba is now facing an almost complete blackout after Trump imposed an oil blockade on the island. The aim is clear. US imperialism sees an opportunity to finally crush the Cuban Revolution after 67 years of relentless assault. It is the duty of the world’s working-class movement to rally to the defence of the Cuban Revolution.

The outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 found Italian imperialism utterly unprepared, either militarily or economically. Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime thus preferred to let its stronger German ally do the fighting, and refrained from entering the war.

At the start of February, as Trump was amassing his armada in the Persian Gulf, as the people of Minnesota engaged in head on struggle with ICE, as the crimes of the ruling class in the Epstein files left the world aghast – 90 leading revolutionary communists from around the world gathered in Italy.

After a month of panic in the Colombian press, 3 February finally arrived and passed. The meeting between Petro and Trump has been considered a great success and a demonstration of the merits of diplomacy and moderation. During a ‘special visit’ to the White House, Petro and Trump had a meeting lasting one hour and forty minutes, during which Trump ended up flattering the Colombian president, saying he was a “very nice guy.”
