80 years ago, in the early hours of 5 October 1945, a pitched battle erupted at the Warner Brothers studio lot in Burbank, California. This was not a shoot for a new war movie, but an armed clash between unionised set decorators on one side; and strikebreakers, mafia goons and police, allied with the studio bosses, on the other. ‘Black Friday’ was the bloody culmination of the biggest strike in Hollywood’s history, a high watermark of labour militancy the likes of which the industry has not seen since.

On 12 September 2025, Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison for the crimes of leading a criminal organisation, attempting to violently abolish the democratic rule of law, coup d'état, damage to national public property and damage to listed property of historic significance.

Brazil faces its greatest external aggression since the 1964 coup. The same imperialist tormentor that orchestrated and encouraged the military dictatorship, the United States, is now imposing a protectionist policy of 50 percent tariffs on the Brazilian economy. Trump's stated objectives are the release of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who longs for a military dictatorship, and the supposed ‘correction of mistreatment’ of American technology companies.

If it is enough to arm oneself with a pistol in order to achieve one’s goal, why the efforts of the class struggle? If a thimbleful of gunpowder and a little chunk of lead is enough to shoot the enemy through the neck, what need is there for a class organization?

According to Red Scare mythology, communism is an “anti-American” doctrine that threatens “democracy” and “freedom.” Trump recently proclaimed that communism is “a philosophy that this country is not ready for and never will be.”

For the first time in 20 years, Bolivia’s Movement for Socialism (MAS) has lost the presidential election – and it was not just any defeat. Having won almost 55 percent of the votes in 2020, MAS now barely reached 3 percent.

On Sunday 17 August, the governing Movement for Socialism (MAS), once the party of former president Evo Morales which has dominated the political scene for two decades lost the presidential elections, taking just 3.16 percent of the vote. In the following article, written on 16 July 2025, the comrades of Núcleo Comunista Revolucionario look at the roots of the crisis and how the Bolivian masses can escape it.

Since 15 August, the United States has deployed a large military force in the Caribbean near Venezuelan territorial waters, with the presence of marines and amphibious troops, destroyers armed with guided missiles, an attack submarine and advanced air and naval surveillance technology.

The US Government has announced the deployment of around 4,000 troops off the coast of Venezuela. On August 14, 2025, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that US Naval and Air forces have been sent near Venezuelan waters. The RCA and RCI stand firmly and unequivocally against this blatant act of imperialist aggression.

Since before the current Trump administration took office, the United States has been imposing aggressive trade tariffs around the world. In 2019, it imposed tariffs on Brazilian steel; in 2023, it was sugar's turn. China, Russia, Venezuela, Iran and many other countries that have challenged US hegemony have faced sanctions, economic barriers and even military intervention.
