We are extremely proud to publish here a brand new English translation of a short 1922 article by Leon Trotsky, Attention to theory. First published in the monthly magazine Under the banner of Marxism, this article met with Lenin’s full approval and is referred to in a piece he wrote for the third edition of the magazine, On the significance of militant materialism. We are republishing the latter alongside this article.

This week in our Lenin in a Year series, we republish a very important article by Lenin from 1922, ‘On the Significance of Militant Materialism’. This article was published in Issue 3 of the monthly journal Pod Znamenem Marksizma (Under the Banner of Marxism). We are also proud to publish a brand-new translation alongside it of a very interesting article by Trotsky, which Lenin directly refers to in this article.

The Middle East is sliding, inexorably it seems, towards regional war. Whose interests would such a war benefit? In a discussion we had in the International Secretariat of the Revolutionary Communist International, we asked ourselves this question.

We are very proud to announce the publication of the second Greek edition of Ted Grant and Alan Woods’ invaluable Marxist analysis of modern science: Reason in Revolt. The second Greek edition features a revised and improved translation, to better bring the lessons of this masterful text to a Greek-speaking audience.

On 14 October, thousands of students at the Punjab Group of Colleges (PGC) protested in Lahore. The students came out in protest after an incident in which a female student was raped by a security guard at Campus 10 of Punjab College Lahore, according to the protesters. Thousands of students from dozens of campuses of PGC Lahore were joined by students from several other colleges and universities in cities across Punjab and beyond.

From Friday 25 to Monday 28 October, members and supporters of the Revolutionary Communist International in North Africa and the Middle East are organising the second ever Arabic Communist University, titled, ‘The Power of Ideas!’

The American Civil War, unlike the conflicts that plague the world today, was just and historically progressive. The Union north smashed the Confederacy of southern slave states and carried out the biggest expropriation of private property in history at the time, with the emancipation of 4 million enslaved people. The Union cause was praised by Karl Marx, who said Lincoln’s battle cry should be: “death to slavery!” With elections in the US just a few weeks away, the American bourgeoisie once again has civil war on its mind….

Ever since the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack on southern Israel, the logic of the situation in the Middle East has been moving in the direction of an escalation of the war beyond Gaza. All attempts to hold back this process have followed the same course. The Americans first state they don’t want an escalation. But each time Netanyahu does something to push towards widening the war, because he knows that the US will always fall on Israel’s side.

University administrations, under intense pressure from their billionaire donors, are cracking down on pro-Palestine students and faculty on campuses across America. They’ve introduced draconian measures aimed at extinguishing the embers of last spring’s Palestine solidarity encampment movement, which sought to force colleges and universities to divest from Israel and the American imperialist war machine.

Working to wipe imperialism off the face of the earth is a fundamental duty taken up by all communists. The day we entered the fight for socialism was the day we pledged ourselves to an uncompromising struggle for a world without imperialism, from the oppressed countries to the imperialist powers, leaving its bloody legacy in the dustbin of history where it belongs. The question is: how?

On 5 November, general elections will be held in Puerto Rico. As happens every four years, people will vote to elect officials to administer the government. But, unlike previous elections, these offer us a historic opportunity.

This year marks 40 years since the release of the film Threads, one of the clearest and most harrowing depictions of the consequences of nuclear war ever produced. With wars and conflicts escalating around the globe, the stark message of this film has never been more relevant. The fight against the barbarity of militarism and imperialism is an existential struggle that communists have a duty to take up.

Israel’s war of words with the United Nations has escalated into deliberate IDF attacks on its peacekeepers in Lebanon. These provocations reveal the embarrassing impotence of the UN and Israel’s sense of utter impunity as it pushes for a new regional war.
