On Wednesday, August 1st, around 200 people demonstrated for over an hour at the doors of the Mexican diplomatic mission in Barcelona, Spain, demanding the release of the political prisoner from Militante, Adán Mejía. This comrade, 24, is a member of Sindicato de Estudiantes' (Students Union) sister organisation in Mexico, the CLEP-CEDEP, an activist in the APPO of Oaxaca and a member of the Marxist Tendency of Mexico Militante. He was illegally arrested in Oaxaca two weeks ago, as part of the brutal campaign of repression being carried out by the regional government of the reactionary Ulíses Ruíz and the illegitimate federal government of Felipe Calderón against the working class movement and left militants. With the intention of sending him straight to prison, without trial or sentence, he has been accused of illegally possessing fire arms unique to the army and drug dealing (!), two very grave crimes. The only crime he has committed, however, has been to put all his strength and energy into the revolutionary struggle to improve the conditions of the people of Oaxaca. On behalf of Sindicato de Estudiantes (Spanish Students Union) Juanjo López, its General Secretary, and Aniol Santo, General Secretary in Catalonia, denounced the ruthless detention of comrade Adán Mejía and explained the situation that workers, students and Mexican workers' organisations face day in and day out in a country where, through electoral fraud, the oligarchy and American imperialism snatched the government from left leader López Obrador. Precisely, it has been the fear of the reactionary Mexican bourgeoisie, a puppet of the imperialists, to the revolutionary process which has been taking form in the last years that prompted the repression against left militants and, especially, against the revolutionary Mexicans, like Adán Mejía. The cases of torture, arrests, threats and violence carried out by the State Security Forces are numerous. Other leaders from youth European organisation addressed the gathering. Dario Salvetti, a national coordinator of the Communist Youth of Italy, Nakai Caldera, from the National Committee of the Communist Youth of France, and Julia Eider, a militant from the Young Socialists of Austria, demanded the immediate release of Adán Mejía and condemned the repressive actions of the Mexican government. Also present were youth and workers from Greece, Italy, Sweden, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Russia and Great Britain. In all these countries, amongst many others, an international campaign for the release of Adán Mejía will be launched in the following days.
