Causes and consequences of the decline of French capitalism

This is a transcript of the introduction to a discussion on ‘Perspectives for France’ held at the Founding Congress of the Revolutionary Communist Party (PCR) on 30 November and 1 December 2024.

The Syrian regime has collapsed. Bashar al-Assad has fled the country. His army has disarmed, and his government has capitulated. The prisons have been overrun, and thousands have been released. Meanwhile, thousands of Syrians have taken to the streets in celebration. 

In yet another sudden and sharp event, highly characteristic of the period of history we are living through, a surprise offensive by Syrian Islamist militants is fast unravelling Syria. Israel’s western-backed wars against Gaza and Lebanon have upended the fragile equilibrium in the Middle East and pulled a thread that has begun unwinding the fabric of the region.

Schon wieder sehen wir eine plötzliche und sehr drastische Entwicklung, wie sie typisch für unsere Zeit ist. In Syrien starteten islamistische Kämpfer eine Überraschungsoffensive und erschüttern das Land. Die vom Westen unterstützten Kriege Israels gegen Gaza und den Libanon haben das labile Gleichgewicht im Nahen Osten völlig auf den Kopf gestellt und einen Stein ins Rollen gebracht, der die ganze Region aus den Fugen reißt.

Dans la soirée du mardi 3 décembre, le président sud-coréen Yoon Suk-seol est apparu dans une allocution surprise à la télévision pour proclamer l’instauration de la loi martiale. Pour justifier cette mesure, il a accusé l’opposition, menée par le parti démocrate, de mener des « activités anti-étatiques » et « d’inciter à la rébellion ». L’instauration de la loi martiale permettait selon lui d’« éradiquer des forces favorables à la Corée du Nord » afin de « protéger l’ordre constitutionnel et la liberté ».

Il regime siriano è caduto. Bashar al-Assad è fuggito dal paese. Il suo esercito ha deposto le armi e il suo governo ha capitolato. Le prigioni sono state prese d’assalto e migliaia di prigionieri sono stati liberati. Nel frattempo, migliaia di siriani sono scesi nelle strade per festeggiare.

U još jednom iznenadnom i naglom događaju, vrlo karakterističnom za razdoblje povijesti u kojem živimo, iznenadna ofenziva sirijskih islamističkih militanata brzo se razvija Sirijom. Izraelski ratovi protiv Gaze i Libanona koje podupire Zapad uzdrmali su krhku ravnotežu na Bliskom istoku i povukli nit koja je počela cijepati tkivo regije.

در یکی دیگر از رویدادهای ناگهانی و پرشتاب، که به یقین مشخصه دوره تاریخی است که ما در آن زندگی می کنیم، یک حمله غافلگیرکننده از سوی شبه نظامیان اسلامگرا به سرعت در حال به نابودی کشاندن سوریه است. جنگ‌های اسراییل با حمایت غرب علیه غزه و لبنان، تعادل شکننده در خاورمیانه را بر هم زده و راه دگرگون سازی بافت منطقه را پیش‌گرفته است.
