Europe

On 11 December, a nationwide general strike has been called in Portugal, that has the potential to paralyse the country. As Portuguese capitalism is wracked with crisis, the bosses are further intensifying the exploitation of the Portuguese working class. The general strike must go further than modest demands, it must mark the beginning of a campaign to bring down the regime itself, and the entire capitalist system!

It is 28 November, a Friday afternoon. The Revolutionary Communist Party’s (RKP) centre in Stockholm is awash with feverish activity. Stacks of boxes of books have been lined up in rows and are being systematically collected by members of the RKP’s Stockholm university branch using two trolleys. In other rooms, people are rehearsing their contributions to the weekend's discussions, someone is preparing an article – visitors from other cities in the country are looking around.

Over the last two weeks, over 350 communists gathered in Switzerland for two ‘schools of communism’, organised by the Revolutionary Communist Party (German: RKP. French: PCR), Swiss section of the RCI.

Two interlinked crises are tearing into the guts of the regime in Ukraine. On the one hand, the front is unravelling. The battlefield situation is deteriorating by the day, if not by the hour. On the other, an enormous corruption scandal threatens to engulf Zelensky and his whole regime. Kiev and western capitals are descending into panic.

On the weekend of 8-9 November, the Organización Comunista Revolucionaria (OCR), the Spanish section of the RCI, held its first national Marxist School in Madrid. It was a great success. This marks an important step in the development of our section as it was the first time that we have held two major national events in the same year.

Trotsky wrote in ‘The Tragedy of Spain’ (1939) that, despite the Spanish proletariat’s revolutionary heroism, they were “brought to ruin by petty, despicable, and utterly corrupted ‘leaders.’” In this episode, we chart the great triumphs and tragic demise of the Spanish Revolution in a complete timeline.
